CAT (Common Admission Test) is the most competitive management entrance exam in India. About 3.3 lakh candidates appear every year for roughly 4,000 IIM seats and over 1.5 lakh seats across 100+ other institutions that accept CAT scores. Getting a high CAT percentile opens the door to the IIMs, FMS, MDI, IIFT, and dozens of other strong programmes.

Section-Wise Strategy
VARC — Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
VARC consists of 3-4 Reading Comprehension passages (16-18 questions) and Verbal Ability questions (para-jumbles, odd sentence, para-summary). The RCs in CAT are demanding — passages from philosophy, economics, science, and history averaging 500-700 words each.
Daily reading is the foundation. Read The Economist, New York Review of Books, or long-form journalism for 30-45 minutes daily for at least 6 months. Para-jumbles and odd-sentence questions require practice with previous CAT papers.
DILR — Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
DILR is the most unpredictable section. Sets can be table-based, network-based, arrangement-based, or entirely novel formats. The key skill: set selection. Do not spend more than 8-10 minutes on a hard set. Solve 2-3 sets correctly rather than attempting all 5.
QA — Quantitative Ability
QA tests Class 10-12 Maths concepts at a higher application level. Key topics: Arithmetic (40% of questions), Algebra, Geometry, Number Systems. Arun Sharma and Sarvesh Verma are standard QA references. Solve 20+ mocks to build speed and accuracy.
IIM Cutoffs by Percentile
| IIM | Overall Percentile (approx.) | Section Cutoff |
|---|---|---|
| IIM Ahmedabad | 99.5+ | 85-90 per section |
| IIM Bangalore | 99+ | 85 per section |
| IIM Calcutta | 99+ | 85 per section |
| IIM Lucknow | 97+ | 80 per section |
| IIM Kozhikode | 95+ | 80 per section |
Beyond CAT Score: GD-PI and WAT
CAT percentile gets you the interview call. But IIMs weigh academics, work experience, diversity, GD/WAT performance, and interview extensively. A 99.5 percentile with a poor GD-PI can lose to a 97 percentile with a stellar interview. Start preparing your "story" — work experience, why MBA, why this IIM — alongside exam prep.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is CAT 2025?
CAT is typically held in late November. IIM Ahmedabad, which rotates as the convening IIM, releases the official notification in July-August.
Is work experience needed for IIM?
Not mandatory. Freshers (0 years experience) are admitted to IIMs. However, work experience adds points in the selection composite score at most IIMs.
What is a good CAT score for non-IIM MBA?
A 90-95 percentile opens doors to MDI, FMS, IIFT, SPJIMR, IMT, and other strong non-IIM programmes. An 85+ percentile is the practical minimum for a "good" MBA college.
