IIT Madras
IIT Madras is India's #1 engineering institution by NIRF ranking and is globally ranked in the top 300 universities. The campus in Adyar is one of the most beautiful in India — a 600-acre forest campus. Admission is through JEE Advanced + JoSAA counselling. Average placement CTC for CS graduates exceeds Rs 40 lakh.
College of Engineering Guindy (CEG)
CEG, established in 1794, is one of Asia's oldest technical institutions. Admission is through TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) based on Class 12 marks. Government engineering seats at CEG are among the most sought-after in Tamil Nadu, with cutoffs for CS at or near 200/200 in the Class 12 marks based formula. Annual fees are minimal — under Rs 50,000.
SSN College of Engineering
SSN is widely considered the best private engineering college in Chennai. It is an autonomous college affiliated to Anna University and has strong industry partnerships, particularly in IT. TNEA cutoff for SSN CS is very high — effectively 190+ out of 200.
TNEA: Tamil Nadu's Engineering Admission System
TNEA is unique in India — it does not use an entrance exam. Admission to government and private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu is based entirely on Class 12 marks. The TNEA score is calculated as a weighted average of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics marks. This means Class 12 board performance is the sole determinant of which college you get.
