National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi)
NLU Delhi consistently ranks 1st or 2nd among India's National Law Universities (the NLU-D rank as it is called in CLAT counselling, though NLU Delhi does NOT use CLAT). NLU Delhi admits students exclusively through its own AILET (All India Law Entrance Test), not through the CLAT consortium.
AILET is a 150-question exam covering English, GK/Current Affairs, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Elementary Mathematics. The cutoff for the General category is typically above 105/150 for the BA LLB programme. NLU Delhi intake is small (around 80-100 students), making it extremely competitive.
Faculty of Law, Delhi University
DU's Faculty of Law is one of India's oldest law schools. It offers the 3-year LLB programme (for graduates) and the LLM. Fees are minimal — one of the most affordable quality law educations in India. Admission is through the DU entrance exam. The 3-year LLB from DU is a credible path for those who first complete a strong undergraduate degree and then pivot to law.
Indraprastha University Law Colleges
IP University affiliates several well-regarded law schools in Delhi — including Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies (VIPS) and Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Management Studies (law department). Admission is through CLAT scores and IPU CET. Fees are moderate at Rs 60,000-1.2 lakh per year.
5-Year Integrated LLB vs 3-Year LLB
Students who know they want law from Class 12 should aim for the 5-year BA LLB or BBA LLB. This is more efficient, saves a year compared to completing a full undergraduate degree first, and positions students for CLAT at age 17-18. Those who discover law after a bachelor's degree can pursue the 3-year LLB — DU and Jamia are the most competitive destinations for this route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does NLU Delhi use CLAT?
No. NLU Delhi uses its own AILET exam. It is the only NLU that does not participate in the CLAT consortium.
What is the fee for the Faculty of Law at Delhi University?
Very low — approximately Rs 15,000-40,000 per year for the LLB programme. DU is the best value law education in Delhi.
Can I join a Delhi law college after scoring below 85 in CLAT?
Yes. IP University affiliates and private law schools like Amity have less restrictive cutoffs. CLAT 85+ percentile opens most NLU doors; IP University schools are accessible at lower scores.
